To Joe's family, friends, and loved ones. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I'm deeply sorry that I wasn't be there today to pay my respects in person. Joe was a close friend of mine at St. Bonaventure. He was an exceptionally warm, kindhearted, and gentle soul. Smart, perceptive, funny, mellow, and understated. Though I didn't see him that much in recent years, when we did get together, it was as if we hadn't missed a beat. I feel his loss. And I feel for those who closest to him, especially his children. As the lyric goes, Heaven is a better place today.

I had the distinct pleasure of knowing Joe Engl for nearly 30 years. His children should know that their father possessed a unique combination of intelligence, charm and humor that made him a cherished friend to so many. He was one of a kind. I understand that a scholarship has been established in Joe's name at St. Bonaventure University Mathematics Department. I would urge all of Joe's friends to consider a contribution.

The OV-8 will never be the same. I am so sad to hear about the passing of my old friend. I wish we could have kept in touch. I have nothing but found memories of the days spent hanging out having our first beers, skateboarding, riding bikes, learning to drive, and just being kids. Rest in peace............
