Obituary of Donald R. Dennis

Smethport - Donald R. Dennis, 81, of Shinglehouse, formerly of Smethport, died Wednesday ,January 14, 2015. He was born Aug 29, 1933 in Eldred, a son of Richard and Margaret Crone Dennis. On Dec. 8, 1956, in Eldred, PA, he married Carroll R. Toothman, who died on March 3, 2004. He then married Joyce B. Lowe on Aug. 19, 2010 in Shinglehouse, PA, who survives. Mr. Dennis was a graduate of Otto Eldred High School and then entered the U.S. Air Force. He served during the Korean Conflict and continued his service over the years, officially retiring from the 107th ARW Air National Guard of Niagara Falls, NY as Master Sgt. In 1993. Don was very proud of his military service with the Air Force over the many years he served his country Mr. Dennis had been a truck driver for Quaker State Oil of Bradford, PA. He was a member of American Legion; John Berg Post #976 of Crosby, the VFW Post #2497 of Smethport, the Northern Star Lodge #555 F&AM of Duke Center, and the Zem Zem Temple of Erie, PA. He was also a very gifted musician and proud of his music career. His dog "Timmy" was always with him as his faithful companion. Sadly, Don had to have him put to sleep this past Christmas Eve. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: two daughters: Karen "Cindy" (Darrell) Hixenbaugh of Shacklefords, VA, and Margaret "Peggy" (Chuck) Maiorana of Lake Ariel, PA two sons: Larry R. (Julie) Dennis of Smethport, and Christopher "Rob" (Carol) Dennis of Cyclone, PA 11 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren three sisters: Kathryn Schwab of Duke Center, PA, Marjorie Gruber of Rockland, CA, and Dorothy Brown of Virginia Beach, VA, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, Don was preceded in death by 1 brother, Joel Dennis, and 2 sisters, Mary Lou and Marcia Dennis. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. Funeral and committal services will be held Saturday, January 17 at 11:00 A.M. from the Hilltop Baptist Church, Gifford, with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 P.M. in the funeral home on Friday by the Northern Star Lodge #555 of Duke Center. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; John Berg Post #976 of Crosby and the Niagara Falls Honor Guard.
