Obituary of Robert L. Cochran

Smethport - Robert L. Cochran, 91, of, Smethport, PA, died Monday (May 9, 2016) in the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport. He was born Apr 8, 1925 in Coryville, a son of Bernard and Iva Dorsett Cochran. On Sept.14, 1945 in Bradford, PA, he married Vera Lucille Austin, who died Feb. 6, 2008. Mr. Cochran attended schools in Farmer Valley and was employed by Pittsburg Corning, Port Allegany, PA for 27 years retiring in 1982 as a supervisor. He was a Staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from 1943 to 1945. Mr. Cochran was an aerial gunner flying in the B-24 during World War II. His plane was shot down over Germany and he became a POW in Stalag Luft IV in Gross Tychow, Pomerania, which is now Poland. He was a member of American Legion Bucktail Post #138, Smethport, PA 16749 and the VFW Post # 2497, Smethport, PA 16749 He is survived by one son: Robert (Kathy) E Cochran of Smethport, PA one son-in-law James McGuire of Smethport, PA Seven grandchildren, Sean, John And Corey Cochran; Scott, Brian And Kevin McGuire; and Wendi Higley; Eight Great Grand Children, Conor Ryan And Brody Cochran; Brandon And Emily Higley; and Colin, Alyssah and Alaynah McGuire. He was preceded in death by daughter, Wanda L. McGuire; nine brother, Lawrence, Lloyd, Leo, Melvin, Walt, Clair, Alfred, Fred and Jay Cochran, and two sister, Nora Booth and Bertha Milliron,. Visitation will be held on Thursday May 12, 2016 from 4 PM to 7 PM in the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA Funeral service will be held Friday, May 13 at 11:00 am from the Hilltop Baptist Church, Gifford with the Rev. Thomas Bean and the Rev. Max Simms co officiating. Burial will be in the Moody Hollow Cemetery, Eldred Twp. Full military honors will be accorded at the church by the American Legion Bucktail Post #138, and the VFW Post #2497 both of Smethport. Memorials may be made to Hamlin Memorial Library, Smethport PA 16749.
