Obituary of Joseph Francis Marquart, III

Smethport - Joseph Francis Marquart, III, 78, of Smethport, passed away Friday (September 23, 2016) in the St. Vincent Health Center, Erie. He was born Nov. 30, 1937 in Philadelphia, a son of Joseph Francis, II and Anna Halloran Marquart. On June 9, 1962, in Philadelphia, he married Julie M. Merkle, who survives. Mr. Marquart was a graduate of North East Catholic High School of Philadelphia and attended New York State Ranger School in Syracuse for forestry. He was an Airman 2nd Class in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Cold War era, where he was stationed in Germany. Joe had worked as a procurement forester for Hammermill Paper Co., and then International Paper Company for 36 years before retiring. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, the North Eastern Loggers Association, was a former Rotarian in Smethport, was a member of the McKean County Conservation District for over 20 years, where he held numerous offices, was a former member of the Smethport Volunteer Fire Dept., was a Pennsylvania Tree Farmer, was an active member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Smethport, where he was a Lector and Usher. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: one son: Joseph F. (Anna P.) Marquart, IV of Springfield, VA two daughters: Julie M. (John Wagner) Marquart of Seattle, WA and Mary M. (Daniel) Kalusz of San Antonio, TX four grandchildren: Daniel, Adam, and Anna Kalusz and Wren Wagner one brother: Thomas E. Marquart of Palmyra, NJ He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held on Friday from 6-8 P.M. at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10 A.M., in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, Pastor, as Celebrant. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport. Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Elizabeth Church Building Fund, the Hamlin Memorial Library, or a charity of the donor's choice.
