Obituary of Edna Jean Thomas

Smethport - Edna Jean Thomas, 92, of Fairfax, VA, passed away Monday (February 5, 2018) in the Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, VA. She was born Oct 13, 1925 in Smethport, a daughter of Walter Leo and Alwilda Ann Fource Wright. On April 10, 1948, at the Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church Rectory in Smethport, PA, she married William E. Thomas, who died in 1986. Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Smethport High School, Class of 1943, and attended the Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing through the Cadet Nursing Program and graduated in 1946. Mrs. Thomas was a Registered Nurse, working general duty and private nursing, and then worked as a bookkeeper for the family owned business, Thomas Petroleum, Inc. Jean was a former member of the United Methodist Church of Smethport and Circle 7. She was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She enjoyed golfing, playing cards, working with stained glass and exercise. She is survived by: one daughter: Barbara Ann (Dennis) Maynard of Smethport two sons: William Bruce (Ann) Thomas of Annandale, VA and Richard Michael (Cathy) Thomas of Smethport one daughter-in-law: Mary Jo Taylor of Sterling, VA eleven grandchildren: Brent, Greg, Ruthann, Ed, Woody, Michelle, Carl, Katie, Sarah, Amy and David fourteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Allan Thomas in 1985. She was also predeceased by two brothers, James Donald Wright and Robert Leo Wright, and one sister, Mary Katharine Johnson. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 11AM in the United Methodist Church of Smethport, with the Rev. Rob Hernan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport.
