Port Allegany - James L. Sunderland, 76, of Turtlepoint, PA passed away unexpectedly though peacefully at his home on Monday, April 14, 2025.

He was born October 21, 1948 in Clearfield, PA and was the son of  Merle and Florence (Woods) Sunderland. On June 15, 1974 he married Joyce R. Chittester, who survives.

Jim was a 1966 graduate of Clearfield High School and graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Forestry.

He was employed as a Forester by the DCNR in Coudersport, and later in Emporium until his retirement in 2006.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from July 3, 1968 to July 2, 1972, during the Vietnam War.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son; Jesse Sunderland of  Franklin, NJ, two daughters; Janine (Eric) Sauers of Turtlepoint, PA, and Julie (Dominic) Petruzzi of Coudersport, PA, two grandchildren; Syrus and Willow Sauers, and one brother; Norman (Patty) Sunderland of Sigel, PA.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lee Sunderland.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Friday April 25, 2025 at the Hartle Tarbox Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Port Allegany.

A memorial service will begin at 12:00 p.m./noon with Rev. J. T. Madison, Pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Port Allegany officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
