Obituary of William K. Halpenny

Smethport - William K.”Bill” Halpenny, 83, of Smethport, died Saturday (January 4, 2014), at his residence in Smethport, PA. He was born Nov 18, 1930 in Smethport, a son of William Orville and Hester Kerr Halpenny. On April 26, 1951, he and Betty Ann Brockitt were married by the Rev. Arthur B. Cope in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport. She preceded him in death on April 11, 2012. Mr. Halpenny was a 1949 graduate of Smethport High School and was very active in football and basketball. He attended Westbrook Business College and Duquesne University. From 1950 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Air Force at several bases in the U.S. and Europe. Bill held various accounting positions over the years, mostly in banking. He started his career at Hamlin Bank in Smethport before moving into public accounting with Helms and Company, also of Smethport. In 1958, he accepted a position with a Pittsburgh bank and was there for twelve years in various trust and commercial banking positions, including audit. In 1967, he was elected Chief Auditor of Peoples Union Bank in McKeesport. In 1970, he accepted a position with Central Counties Bank in State College, PA as Vice President and Controller. He retired as Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Central Counties Bancorp, Inc. in 1987. In the late 1960’s, Bill served as a director of the Brookline Templar Chapter of Demolay, assisted with the organization and establishment of Junior Achievement in McKeesport, and was an instructor for the NRA program in Brentwood, PA, teaching gun safety and target shooting to eleven and twelve year olds. In the 1970’s, he taught College Accounting I sponsored by the American Institute of Banking. Bill was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Smethport, where he served on the Vestry and as Treasurer. He was a life member of VFW Post #2497 and a member of the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138, both of Smethport. In 2005, he became a Fifty Year member of the McKean Lodge #388 F&AM, also of Smethport. He was a member of the Valley of Williamsport Consistory and he also served as President of the Juniata Chapter of the Bank Administration Institute. He is survived by: one daughter: Karen S. (Bill) Edwards of Harrisburg, PA two sons: William O. Halpenny, II of Loveland, CO and Michael R. (Becky) Halpenny of Bellefonte, PA six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren one sister: Jean Halpenny of Bedford, TX companion Helen Canfield of Smethport, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Laura. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service of Burial and Holy Eucharist will be held on January 18, 2014 in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Smethport, at 1 P.M. with the Rev. Joan Piatko officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport. A Masonic service will be held by the McKean Lodge #388 F&AM of Smethport. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the St. Luke’s Building Fund.
