Obituary of Arthur Rudolf Gallup

Smethport - Arthur Rudolf Gallup, 92, of Richmond, VA, died Saturday (February 15, 2014) in the Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center, Richmond, VA. He was born June 24, 1921 in Betula, PA, a son of Arthur Raymond and JoHanna Thiele Gallup. On June 27, 1949, in Elmira, NY, he married Emily Jean Banzhof, who died September 14, 2013. Mr. Gallup was a graduate of Norwich Township High School and attended Westbrook Business Academy in Olean, NY at 16 years of age. He was a 1st Sgt. in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, from 1942 to 1946. While he was in the Army, he attended LSU for Basic Engineering. He then received his Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering from Penn State University, and later his Master’s in Chemical Engineering from North Western University. Mr. Gallup was employed as a Chemical Engineer for DuPont in Richmond, VA, from 1951 to 1984, at which time he retired. DuPont hired Arthur as a consultant from 1985 to 1996. He was a member of the Pace Memorial United Methodist Church of Richmond, VA, was Chairman of County Committee, Chesterfield Co., VA, was a member of the Teflon Fibers Bald Eagles Bowling League of Richmond, VA, was Chairman of the board of Pace Memorial Methodist Church in Richmond, VA, was secretary of the DuPont Retirees Group, was Alumni President of the Norwich Township High School, was a past member of McKean Lodge #388 F&AM of Smethport, a member of the American Legion, and the Acca Temple Shriners of Richmond, VA. He is survived by: two daughters: Elizabeth Suzanne Gallup of Lee County, VA and Cynthia Jeanne Gallup of Fairfax County, VA three grandchildren: Chelsea Lean Rasnic, Thomas Logan Rasnic, and Johanna Christina Katherine Jade D'Avanzo. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, one an infant and the other, Thiel Ainsley Gallup. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, from 6-8 P.M. at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA, and again on Saturday, from 10-11 A.M. A combined funeral service for Arthur and his wife, Emily, will be held Saturday, February 22 at 11:00 am from the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St. Smethport, with the Rev. Rob Hernan, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Smethport, officiating. Burial will be in the Norwich Cemetery, Colegrove. A Masonic service will be conducted on Saturday morning at 11:00AM prior to the funeral. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport.
