Obituary of Robert J. Scherer

Port Allegany - Robert J. Scherer, 93, of Port Allegany, passed away on Wednesday (October 3, 2018) in the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.

 

He was born Sept. 7, 1925 in Port Allegany, a son of Robert A. and Ellen Johnson Scherer. On March 16, 1947 in Wellsboro, PA, he married Sarah E. Rumbaugh who died October 28, 2014.

 

Mr. Scherer was a graduate of Port Allegany High School.

 

He was an Electricians Mate Second Class EMC2 in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946.

 

Mr. Scherer worked for the family business, Keystone Gas and Oil Co. of Port Allegany. He later became an insurance agent and opened the Scherer Insurance Agency of Port Allegany.

 

Mr. Scherer was a member of the Moose Lodge #460, VFW Post #6391 and the American Legion Frank Burt Post #258 all of Port Allegany. He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge #505 F&AM and the Coudersport Consistory.

 

He is survived by:

One daughter: Linda (Max) Drauschak of Port Allegany

Two sons: Robert J. (Jill) Scherer of Port Orange, FL and John R. (Marianne) Scherer of Port Allegany
Seven Grandchildren: John R. Scherer, Jr., Ellen Scherer, Nicholas B. Drauschak, Nicole L. Drauschak, Sara Nightengale, Andrew Scherer, and Rachel Scherer
Eight Great Grandchildren: Nolan and Liam Drauschak, James and Nathaniel Nightengale, Bryce, Finn, Casey and Emmett Scherer
Two sisters: Nan Haler of Des Moines, Iowa and Karen Boran of State College, PA, and several nieces and nephews.                            

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sarah and one sister Dorothy Ward.

 

At Robert’s request, there will be no visitation. A memorial  service will be held at a later date and time.

Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
