Obituary of Hannah Jane Mencer

Smethport--Hannah Jane Mencer, was born December 22,1926 to John and Cora Freyer in Clairton,PA. The youngest of four children, Hannah graduated from Clairton HS in 1944 and then the University of Michigan, School of Pharmacy, 1949.

While in Ann Arbor she met and wed the future Judge Glenn E. Mencer and was happily married for over 56 years.

In 1951 they moved to Eldred where Hannah was involved with the Methodist Church as an organist which continued a lifetime of generous support and involvement with her church. While Hannah was raising her three children, she worked as a relief pharmacist in many drugstores throughout the area.

In 1964, they moved to Smethport, Judge Mencer’s hometown.

Hannah was a child of the depression and was notorious for reusing every container ever brought into the house. Her motto was “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”, but this mindset allowed her the finances to put all her children and grandchildren through college. Expiration dates on food were just a “suggestion” and she could stretch a roast chicken into nine days of meals. She was a lifelong knitter and a steadfast support team for her family. She had a circle of loving friends and neighbors whom she loved deeply and helped make it possible for her to remain in her home as long as possible.

Hannah died at Sena Kean Manor on April 1, 2021 from complications of a stroke. She was 94.

She is survived by her children, Ruth Eastwood(Diane Edge, DDS) of San Diego, California, Cora Shinaberry of Austin, Texas, and Glenn J. Mencer(Virginia) of Moore, Oklahoma. She has 5 wonderful grandchildren and 7 beautiful great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007 and her grandson, Glenn, in 2014.
