Obituary of Samuel D. Costa

Smethport - Samuel D. Costa, Jr., 80, of Smethport, passed away Tuesday (February 1, 2022) at Bradford Regional Medical Center, Bradford.

 

He was born July 29, 1941 in Austin, the son of Samuel Costa, Sr. and Margaret Borelli. On September 12, 1998, at St. Raphael Church, Eldred, he married Dorothy A. “Dolly” Galloway, who survives.

 

Sam was a 1959 graduate of Smethport High School and attended St. Bonaventure University.

He built Costa's Hardware and opened it in 1971.  He retired from the hardware business in 2000.

 

Sam was very active in the local area.  He was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church of Smethport and had been active with St. Raphael’s Church of Eldred through the years.  He was a lectern, scheduler and Eucharistic Minister at both churches.  He was a huge supporter and loved all Smethport School Athletics.  He also served on the board of directors of Cotter & Company (True Value) from July of 1988 to April of 1996.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by

One son:  Ronald (Jennifer) Hollowell of Smethport

Three grandchildren:  Hannah, Nathan and Aidan Hollowell

Three sisters:  Patricia Costa Viglucci of Rochester, NY, Thomasina Costa Buonucore of Haverstraw, NY and Judy (Michael) Manza of West Simsbury, CT

One brother:  Paul (Heather) Costa of Smethport

15 nieces and nephews

One Aunt:  Louise Gerardy of Port Allegany

And best friends, “Clip” and Judy Gregory of Smethport

 

Sam was preceded in death by his parents.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10 AM in St. Elizabeth Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, pastor, as Celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport.

 

A Memorial Celebration for Sam will be announced to be held this summer.
