Obituary of Francis A. DeLancey
SMETHPORT, Pa. --- Francis “Fran” De Lancey passed away on May 18, 2022 in Bethel Park, PA after a courageous bout with lung cancer.
Fran was born February 25, 1943 in Harrisburg, PA, the younger son of Sherman R. De Lancey and Dorothy (Adams) De Lancey.
He was a native of Newport, PA and a 1961 graduate of Newport High School. Fran graduated from Shippensburg University in 1966. He earned his Master of Education from Shippensburg in 1969. Additional graduate studies were done at The Pennsylvania State University and State University of New York, College at Cortland.
Fran married Mary Sharon Mayo of Smethport, PA in April of 1969.
He taught in the Lower Dauphin School District in the 1966-1967 school year. In the Fall of 1967 he started a thirty-four year teaching career in Smethport, PA.
Fran was the Smethport correspondent for the Bradford Era from 1978 to 2021.
He had a strong sense of community. He was a member of the Smethport Area Jaycees, a life member of the McKean County Fair Association, McKean County Historical Society, and Smethport Volunteer Fire Department. Fran was also active in the County and State Democratic Committee. He was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church where he was a lector, usher, eucharistic minister and served on the Pastoral Council as President and Secretary. Fran also belonged to the Knights of Columbus (3rd degree).
Fran is survived by his son Andy, daughter in-law Karen and grandsons Samuel and Brandon De Lancey of Bethel Park, PA., sister in-laws Kate (Dan) Nichols, Maureen (Harry) Barkley, brother in-law Michael Mayo, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Fran is preceded in death by his parents Sherman and Dorothy, older brother Louis A. De Lancey and wife Sharon De Lancey.
Friends and family will be received in the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport, PA on Sunday, May 22, 2022 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church at 10 AM on Monday, May 23, 2022. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport, PA.
