Obituary of Helen A. Howland

Port Allegany - Helen A. Howland, 98, of Port Allegany, passed away on Tuesday (June 21, 2022) at her home with her daughter by her side.

 

She was born December 9, 1923 in Coudersport, the daughter of Carl Swift and Arla May James Slingerland. On May 9, 1943, she married Melvin Greiner.  On August 9, 1947, she married Lawrence R. Howland.

 

Helen worked as a machine operator for GTE Sylvania of Emporium. 

 

She was a member of Phoenix Chapter #15 Order of the Eastern Star.  She had previously been a member of Keystone Chapter #2 Order of the Eastern Star and had served as Worthy Matron of Myrtle Chapter #46 Order of the Eastern Star.  She had been Mother Advisor of Port Allegany Assembly #141 Order of Rainbow for Girls.  She was a recipient fo the Grand Cross of Color awarded by the Order of Rainbow for Girls.

 

She had been a member of the Auxiliaries for both the VFW and American Legion, both of Port Allegany.  She had been active in the Women of the Moose. She had also volunteered as a Gray Lady at the Port Allegany Hospital many years ago.

 

She is survived by:

Two daughters:  Judy (George) Daniels of Port Allegany and Shirley (Donald) Warren of Middlebury Center, PA

Seven grandchildren:  Jabe (Michelle) Warren of Milleton, PA; Zeb (Aitor) Warren of Menorca, Spain,  Quinn Warren of Elmira, NY, Nancy Wilber of Smethport, PA; Bruce (Dawn Ernst) Bosworth of Port Allegany; Richard (Cindy) Bosworth of Port Allegany and Marge Simpson of California.

Ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addtion to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, two grandsons Jeff Bosworth and Kirk Simpson, and her siblings:  Mildred Lowanna Barber, Harold Slingerland, and George Edwin Swift.

 

Visitation and funeral services will be held privately with the family.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
