Obituary of Constance M. Herzog

Smethport - Constance M. "Connie" Herzog, 93, of Smethport, died Tuesday (June 8, 2010) in the Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center, Smethport, after a brief illness. Born June 4, 1917 in Bradford, she was the daughter of Walter M. and Mary Ethridge Magee. On August 4, 1936 she married Richard B. Herzog in Smethport. On July 3, 1971 she married Robert L. Herzog in Toms River, NJ. Robert died on June 12, 2000. She was a graduate of Bradford High School class of 1934. She attended Allegheny College in Meadville where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, a national women's social sorority. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Smethport and belonged to the Indian Echo Country Club in Port Allegany. She was a former member of the Women's Literary Club in Bradford. She is survived by two sons, Tim E. Herzog of Loudon, TN and Todd A. Herzog of McMinnville, TN, two daughters, Toby Jo Woodhouse of Corona Del Mar, CA and Deborah K. Orlov of Berwyn, PA, one grandson Todd R. Herzog of West Carrollton, OH, and five granddaughters - Kara Herzog Glencross of Alpharetta, GA, Susan Herzog of Atlanta, GA, Kim Woodhouse Middleton of Seattle, WA, Kelly King-O'Brien of Chicago, IL, and Carrie O'Brien of Oakhurst, CA. One granddaughter, Jennifer Lynne Clark of McMinnville, TN, predeceased her in 2009. She leaves four stepsons, Gary M. Herzog, Stephen Herzog, and David Herzog all of Smethport and Douglas Herzog of Toms River, NJ, and two stepdaughters, Cheryl Juhasz of Richmond, KY and Julia Herzog of Noblesville, IN. She was predeceased by stepson Greg Herzog in 1986. The survivors also include great grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and several nieces. She leaves one sister, Erla Kay Sipe of Little Valley, NY. She had one brother, Gordon W. Magee, who predeceased her in 2002. Connie started playing golf at age 60 and played multiple times in 2009 at age 92, including four days in a row last August with her son Todd. The oldest golfer in her Magee family was cousin Margaret who played until age 85. Connie was an active member of the Bowman Fitness Center in Smethport, averaging three workouts a week for the last several years. She was very involved with e-mailing her children and grand children. She even had her own Facebook page. Her faithful companion was Miss Muffet, a female Jack Russell terrier who was at her side every day and recently adopted by daughter Debbie. Connie is best known as a very kind, caring, pleasant, and thoughtful person. She is missed by family and friends alike. She made a difference in many lives. Connie was born five days after JFK. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27th, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc, 2 Bank St. Smethport. A funeral service will be offered by the United Methodist Church of Smethport on Wednesday, July 28th at 11 am, with the Rev. Bob George, pastor, officiating.
