Obituary of John C. Rose

Smethport - John C. "Jack" Rose, 92, of East Smethport, passed away, Sunday (July 4, 2010) at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug 18, 1917 in Bradford, a son of Carl and Alta Buel Rose. On February 1, 1939, he married Agnes Kearnes. She passed away on Nov. 1, 1965. On February 14, 1968, he married Dorothy E. Oiler Stewart, who passed away March 19, 1992. Mr. Rose attended Bradford schools and was a veteran of the National Guard. Mr. Rose worked as an Operator at the Quaker State Oil Refinery of Farmers Valley, PA. He retired in 1982 after 41 years of employment. He was a Life member and was the oldest living member of the Smethport Fire Dept., joining in 1946. He was a past Fire Chief, and Asst. Fire Chief. He was also a life member of the Smethport Fire Police, a member of the Tri-County Firemen's Association, a member of the Port Allegany Moose Lodge #460, a social member of the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport, and St. Elizabeth Church, Smethport, where he had been an usher. He had been the parade marshall in Smethport for many years and had started and called Bingo at the Fire Hall. He is survived by one daughter: Barbara (William M., Jr.) Murray of Blairsville, GA one son: Thomas (Sheilla) Rose of Bradford, PA Step Son, Kent (Lois) Stewart of Whippany, NJ; step daughter, Pamela (John) Nick of Erie, PA. 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2great great grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 5 sisters. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 PM at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 pm, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, pastor of St. Elizabeth Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport.
