Obituary of Margaret Jane Lucas

Smethport- Margaret "Peggie" Lucas, 81, of Erie, died Saturday (August 6, 2011) in the UPMC-Hamot, Erie. She was born June 10, 1930 in Washington, D.C., a daughter of James D. and Gertrude Harvey Lucas. Peggie was a graduate of Chamberlin Jr./Sr. High School of Washington, D.C. She worked for the Pentagon for several years before moving to Erie. She worked for Paris Cleaners and was a driving instructor for many years in Erie to many young driving students. She was proud of her students in that they all passed their driving exams on the first try. She was also employed by General Electric of Erie, from where she retired in 1994. Peggie loved the Washington Redskins and softball. She played women's semi-pro softball in D.C. for several years. She loved all animals, especially her cat "Annie" and her dog "Rio". She is survived by nieces Grace (Jerome) Radford and Mary (fiancée Lee) Downs, nephew Mike (Alicia) Lucas, several great and great-great nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law Francis "Bud" (Joan) Downs, The Sayers family: Beth, Joe, Susan, Nancy, and Trudi and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister Anne Downs, a brother Jim Lucas, and a nephew John Downs. Visitation will be held privately. A Mass of Christian burial will be said on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 10:00 A.M., in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, pastor as Celebrant. Committal will be in Norwich Cemetery, Colegrove, PA. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the ASPCA or the Humane Society. Online condolences can be left at www.hartle-tarboxfuneralhomes.com.
