Obituary of Betty A. Halpenny

Smethport - Betty Ann Halpenny, 81, of Smethport, PA died Wednesday (April 11, 2012) in the Bradford Regional Medical Center, Bradford. She was born Sept. 26, 1930 in Bradford, a daughter of Orval and Margaret Cunningham Brockitt. On April 26, 1951, she got married to William K. Halpenny at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport by the Rev. Arthur B. Cope. Betty resided in Rixford and attended schools in Otto Township through the tenth grade before moving to Ormsby. After moving, she attended and graduated from Smethport High School in 1948. She graduated from the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing and received her Registered Nurse license in 1951. Mrs. Halpenny was licensed as a Registered Nurse in California, New York, and Pennsylvania. She worked at hospitals in Sacramento, Olean, Pittsburgh and State College. Her preferred duty was patient care, but did specialize in utilization review, retiring from Centre Community Hospital, State College, PA in 1986. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Smethport, the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, and Phoenix Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was recognized as a 50 year member in 2006. She also received a certificate for 30 years of participation in the Harvard University Nurse's Health Study in 2006. She was also a volunteer with the American Red Cross for over 20 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: one daughter: Karen Edwards of Harrisburg, PA two sons: William O. Halpenny, II of Loveland, CO and Michael R. Halpenny of Bellefonte, PA six grandchildren, six great grandchildren two sisters: Billie Williams and Sue Karmonocky both of Johnstown, PA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Virginia Marra and Shirley Denning. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service of Burial and Holy Eucharist will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 1 P.M. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Mother Stacey Fussell, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to St. Luke's Episcopal Church building fund.
