Obituary of Doris Madeline Shelander

Smethport - Doris Madeline Wells Shelander, 83, of Smethport, died Monday (March 31, 2014) in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY. She was born Oct. 10, 1930 in Bradford, a daughter of Charles D. and Madeline Burt Wells. On November 21, 1953, in Bradford, PA, she married Edward W. Shelander, who survives. Mrs. Shelander was a 1950 graduate of Bradford High School and attended Millard-Fillmore Nursing School of Buffalo, NY, where she received her nursing degree. She was a registered nurse at the Port Allegany Community Hospital for 31 years. She was a member and former Treasurer of the United Methodist Church of Smethport, the Port Allegany Nurses Club, the Business Women of Smethport, and the Maud Rebekah Lodge #175. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: three daughters: Barbara Ann (Lonnie) Hovis of Smethport, Amie Jo (Mark) Lingenfelter of Emporium, and Martha Louise (Floyd) Russel of Fayetteville, NC five granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Wells, and one sister, Harriett Brown. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, at 11 AM, in the United Methodist Church of Smethport, with the Rev. Rob Hernan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the United Methodist Church of Smethport or a charity of the donor's choice.
