I send my heartfelt condolences to the Nelson family. It was an honor for me to serve as a police officer with "Chief" Carl Nelson at both Lock Haven and Kutztown universities.
When Carl hired me at Lock Haven, it was my first job out of college and in those years he had a tremendous influence on my career in higher education. Because of Carl's mentoring, I completed my master's degree in criminology and I even wrote my PhD dissertation about campus law enforcement training.
Carl was not only a pioneer of the Sky Marshal program, but he was one of the first campus police directors to promote full professionalism, training and ongoing education for college and university police. His impact on the field of campus law enforcement was exceptional and will long stand as part of his legacy.
Rest now in peace, Carl.

Mr. Nelson and his blue eyes and charismatic smile are now in heaven. It was such a pleasure having met Mr. Nelson. I will keep with me the many memories of his endless engaging stories, long games of monopoly on a large round wooden table surrounded by antiques in the Nelson home in Smethport and memories of welcoming him and Mrs. Nelson the first time they ever visited Brownsville, Texas where we first met many many moons ago at an Italian restaurant in 2007. I still recall the first thing he said to me at the end of our first interaction together ,following a table shared chocolate Italian cake with ice cream, “ Boy you sure are lots of fun!” followed by chuckles and a grand smile. I had the pleasure of many years of interactions with him and the Nelson family and he will always be kindly remembered in my book. My condolences and respects to the Nelson family and my hugs and good vibes to Carl and Pat ( or Bailey as I called her) who are now reunited in heaven; may their love story continue into eternity.
With love,
-Maria Alejandra Mazariegos

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy is with Carl's family. He and my Dad (Dave Edinger) were great friends. They became friends when Carl worked at Corning Glass and would discuss scripture for hours. My Dad also enjoyed the outdoors and he and Carl had many fishing adventures together. His friendship was treasured by our entire family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
