I want to extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Shirey's loved ones. I had him for a history teacher in the late 80's and thanks to him, I can still rattle off the preamble to our constitution. He was always sweet, but sharp witted and undeniably passionate about history. As an adult I met him again when he began attending church at Westbranch UMC. I was not surprised that he was the same sweet man I remembered. Heaven has gained a very charming angel.

Mr. Shirey was my 8th grade history teacher in 1972-73. He was an excellent teacher. He was always enthusiastic about his subject and respectful and friendly to his students and everyone. I remember that on 8th grade football game day he always used to tell the girls to stay away from his players with a big smile on his face. I attended Clarion State College where I was blessed to have his brother George as my teacher also. I just felt blessed to have two such wonderful teachers. Mr. Shirey will be greatly missed and I know he had a positive impact on every one he came in contact with. God Bless him and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Sending my sincere condolences with the passing of Mr. Shirley. I had him as a history teacher in Smethport in the late 1980’s. He was a great man and an excellent teacher but whenever I think of him, it was his kindness to all that sticks out the most in my mind. I am blessed to have had him as a teacher!

Dick and his good friend Angelo Gioiosa were student teachers in Punxsutawney. They took Neal Hullihen and I for long cross country runs that fall and taught us about running. He inspired my love for cross country and track which has stayed with me for over 50 years.
The more important lesson that he taught by example was how to be a better person and to be respectful of everyone. He will be remembered.

Mr. Shirey was my eighth grade history teacher at Smethport High School, and he was one of the best teachers I have ever had, no matter what subject. It was clear how much he loved history and teaching--don't remember ever seeing him without a kind smile.
