I thought I had left a condolence note for Fr. Chuck’s family but don’t find one here. I am so happy that the posts here are of how I remember him. Soft spoken and great sense of humor. Our family met him back in the St Anndrew’s days. My mom and Dad, Peg and Rudy Patrick loved this man,as my kids grew to love him and confide in him. He married my sister and I in a double wedding at St Andrew’s. 24 years later he married my son in St Rosary church. My parents moved all many times. He always visited and stayed in touch, my parents were visiting and my Dad had been sick for quit a few years. During an Erie visit we had to take him to V.A. Hospital. Father Schmidt read the last rites. Dad got better, thank God. Father said he really didn’t think he would make it. Two years later, my Dad passed in Ocala, Fl. In 1999. Father came to console y Mus and say mass. Mom just passed last April 13th of Covid. My brother, Jeff, passed in November. I tried to find Father. When I saw his obituary, I was heart broken . I would have gone to see him. So to his family, you must realize he was loved dearly by Karen, Sharen, Jeffrey, Patty , Mike and my parents, Peg and Rudy. Karen Patrick Huey

I worked with Chuck over our years in ministry and always found him to be a delightful human being, a very spiritual man, and lots of fun. Those days bring a 'smile to my face'.

Absolutely loved this guy. Was my History teacher and all time favorite high school teacher at Cathedral Prep (he hated it!). Probably good that it was left out of his obit.

My deep condolences to Karen, Mark, Eric, Kathy and Cole as well as the rest of his family. It was such an honor to visit with Fr. Charles in September, celebrate his birthday and have deep conversations with him. He was a wonderful, gentle and loving man. His presence is already missed. May you all feel the peace he eluded when in his presence.

My family were parishioners at St. Andrew's at the time Fr. Schmitt began his journey as a priest. I have fond memories of his visits and shared meals. His was a gentle soul, full of God's grace, and he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

From the first time I met him in 1966at St. Andrew Parish and I taught at the school there,I always considered him to be a REAL "priest's priest" and he reinforced these feelings during Deaconal formation class.
Eternal rest grant unto him,O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

My sincerest and deepest sympathy for the family of Father Schmitt. My family were parishioners of Immaculate Conception when he was the pastor there. I was a teenager at the time and Fr. Schmitt was immensely instrumental in my spiritual growth, for which I will forever be grateful. He became close friends with my family and we enjoyed many wonderful times breaking bread together around our dining room table. When my father was placed on hospice in 2016, Fr. Schmitt came to visit him in Erie numerous times and presided at his funeral. He also visited with my mother and I several times after my father passed just to make sure we were okay. I so appreciated how he was a priest for everyone and his love for and support of the marginalized impressed me and inspired me to do the same. Fr. Schmitt truly was a fine example of Christianity in practice. May he be justly rewarded and rest in peace. May your fond memories and faith carry you through this difficult time. Peace. Gay Catania
