Obituary of Stephen L. Herzog

Smethport-Stephen L. Herzog, 67, of Smethport died unexpectedly Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Bradford Regional Medical Center. Born August 20, 1943 in Bradford, he was a son of the late Robert L. and LaVerna Moore Herzog. On August 17, 1968, in New Jersey, he married Beckie Compton who preceded him in death on November 13, 2000. He was a 1961 graduate of Smethport Area Jr.-Sr. High School and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics at Lock Haven State College in 1966 and a master's degree in physical sciences at Trenton State College in 1969. He thoroughly loved teaching, having taught numerous math, chemistry and sciences courses. During his teaching career, which included teaching at Smethport Area Jr. -Sr. High School, he continued to work for the family business which eventually became his full-time career. At the time of his death, he owned and operated Valley Petroleum in Farmers Valley with his brother, David. He is survived by a daughter, Janene (Shane) Dunn of Smethport; two sons, Brett Herzog of King of Prussia and Kurt (Rachel) Herzog of Germantown, MD.; a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Herzog of Bradford; three grandchildren, Hannah and Carson Dunn of Smethport and Mia Herzog of Bradford; three brothers, Gary (Laura Burdick) Herzog and David (Sharon) Herzog of Smethport, Douglas (Eva) Herzog of Toms River, NJ; two sisters, Cheryl (Lad) Juhasz of Richmond, KY, and Julia Herzog of Noblesville, IN; two brothers-in-law, William Wagenbrenner of Cumming, GA, and Harry Compton of Bartlesville, OK; a sister-in-law, Kathy Herzog of Bradford; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory Herzog in 1986, nephew, Robert S. Herzog in 2002, and step mother, Connie Herzog in 2010. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport. Funeral and committal services will be held privately by request of the family. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or a charity of the donor's choice.
